Tencent’s super app WeChat is “one of largest platforms for counterfeit goods in China,” the office of the US Trade Representative (USTR) said in a Tuesday report. The US government’s “notorious markets” list also identified five other Chinese online marketplaces and seven physical markets in China as engaging in or facilitating substantial trademark counterfeiting or copyright piracy, including Pinduoduo, Baidu Wangpan, and Alibaba-owned AliExpress and Taobao. The report claimed that China is the largest source of counterfeit goods coming into the US, with 75% of the counterfeit and pirated goods seized by US Customs and Border Protection in 2021 originating in China. Neither the Chinese government nor any of the Chinese companies named on the latest “notorious markets” list have yet responded to it. [USTR]
