Specialists designers for difficult and small spaces.Commissions undertaken throughout the U.K. http://www.carvedwood.co.uk This is a perfect example of how bespoke design can work in a tiny space, in fact this space is so small I’m having to sit down to do this video. The client came to me worried that I wouldn’t be able to create something in such a tiny space to make it work, but I love a challenge so I thought I’d have a go. I decided to make everything way, way smaller than it would normally be in a standard kitchen design, so these cabinets only have a maximum projection of 350 mm from the wall which is just over half the size of a bog-standard kitchen cabinet. Normal cabinets in here would dominate the space and absolutely destroy the room proportions. By building the cabinet’s smaller I’m able to maximize the space and make it look aesthetically very pleasing because you don’t have these enormous things jutting out into the room. They also work on a practical level because as you open the door you’re not struggling to the back for a really deep cabinet so they really do work practically. The client came to me and said she really loved the full sculptural sort of works I’m well known for, but she wanted something a little more understated and subtle so I came up with this kind of simple in frame design with a simple door held by hand forged hinges created by a blacksmith. All cabinets are solid oak throughout with a Carrara marble top. This is an extremely high spec and is built to last a lifetime, the more abuse it gets the better, unlike these painted kitchens which tend to look tatty after a very short period of time and finish up in landfill after only a few short years. In order to make this kitchen different from the run of the mill, I decided to incorporate sculptural posts, these posts are carved entirely by hand, and it’s not possible to make them on a lathe, they have to be made by hand so it’s highly unlikely that you’ll see this kind of detailing again so it keeps what would ordinarily be a relatively simple and straightforward kitchen, it makes it into something different. The client was extremely pleased with the aesthetic and even more pleased with the fact that I was able to increase the space with a very thoughtful and careful design.
