Book Review: The Honeys

The story follows Mars, a gender fluid teen who after witnessing the death of their twin sister (Caroline) sets out to find answers and figure out what exactly happened to her. She wasn’t acting like herself on the night of her death, and Mars wants to know why.

Caroline has spent every summer since childhood at the prestigious Aspen Conservancy Summer Academy, and Mars knows there are answers hiding away at summer camp. But what they find is NOT what they expected.

Sure, there are summer camp traditions steeped in old-fashioned gender roles, no one is exactly trying to hide that bullshit, but there are more dangerous things hiding away in the forest, and the most sinister part of it all is buzzing around right in plain sight.

Mars knows that the Honeys, their sister’s group of friends, can help find answers, but only if the popular Queen Bee is willing to help.

This story is full of grief and anger, hope and beauty, and an unrelenting need to find justice and comfort in the truth; Mars will do anything to get closure after Caroline’s death.

The writing in this book was beautiful, the atmosphere was stunning, and despite descriptions of open fields, wildflowers, and basking in the summer sun, an uneasiness leaks through the pages and causes such incredible dread that you’ll be up reading until 1AM trying to figure out what the hell is happening.

Reading The Honeys was an emotional rollercoaster and I’m so sad it’s over but am incredibly excited for others to pick it up.
