From January 8 China lifts the main restrictions on entry for international travelers, which were introduced as part of the fight against coronavirus.

Arrivals in China from abroad are still required to take a COVID-19 test 48 hours before travel, but they will no longer have to quarantine when they arrive in China.

Restrictions on movement between mainland China and Hong Kong have also been eased, in particular, mandatory quarantine has been lifted. According to the South China Morning Post, the number of operating checkpoints has been increased: three of them continued to work during the pandemic, in addition to them, four more points have opened.

To enter mainland China from Hong Kong, you must register online and take a COVID-19 test 48 hours before departure. The Associated Press, citing the Hong Kong authorities, reports that in the future it is planned to resume the work of seven more checkpoints.

China lifts travel restrictions on the eve of the Lunar New Year, which will come on January 22. During the festive period, the Chinese traditionally visit relatives. According to media reports, among those who arrived on the first flights after the lifting of covid restrictions were those who could not see their family for several years.

Since 2020, China has adhered to a policy of “zero tolerance” for COVID-19, including lockdowns and mandatory quarantine for those who came into contact with infected people. In December, the country’s authorities began to lift some restrictions, after massive protests of Chinese citizens, tired of severe restrictions.
