Douyin Supermarket, a new online supermarket service from TikTok’s sister app in China, recently went live. The entry of ByteDance’s popular video-sharing platform into the online grocery industry will only serve to increase competition in the already hotly contested sector, which features major players such as Tmall, JD, and Meituan. The latter rebranded its group-buying unit in October into a supermarket offering next-day deliveries. After searching for Douyin Supermarket in the Douyin app, users can shop online from a variety of categories ranging from snacks and household cleaning to personal care and cosmetics, with everything issued directly by the brands and backed by a genuine product guarantee.
