Welcome to Week 4 of my ‘Down by the Sea’ Blanket crochet-along (CAL)!

The crochet this week is inspired by beachside railings we might find down by the sea, and of course ice cream which we might just treat ourselves to… 🙂

Let’s begin with a little chat to introduce Week 4… enjoy! 🙂

I’ve had such lovely feedback from so many of you to say how much you’re enjoying crocheting this blanket. Thank you… 🥰

And the timing seems particularly perfect, especially for us here in the UK whilst the dark evenings are in full swing, because it makes crocheting indoors feel just that extra little bit cosy.❤️ The sun is setting at around 4pm here so it’s certainly getting dark early…

Of course I do love to think about those of you in the southern hemisphere and other parts of the world where you’re crocheting this blanket during your spring / summer months and lighter days. 😄☀️

So let’s look at the round ups of photos shared this week in either the Facebook Group or over on Instagram – it really warms my heart when I see these pop up on my social media feeds…

As we move past the halfway mark, this week we will start to add rows to one end of the blanket meaning we’re turning our square into a rectangle…

Brighton has over 2.5km of mint green railings spanning the seafront. They date back to 1886. I find it incredible to think how old these railings are and that they’re still going strong over 130 years later, although the upkeep and painting must be relentless against the sea and patches of rust inevitably show through…

In Bournemouth there are railings in the Lower Gardens leading down to the sea… there’s a lot of history here too with the city council describing as follows:

Development of the land began in 1840, but it was not until 1859 that the owners granted permission for the area to become a public pleasure ground. There was a competition to design the Lower Pleasure Ground in 1871. The winner was the aptly named Philip Henry Tree, whose design included new walks, plantations and flowerbeds.

And then we have ice cream! Or maybe candy floss?! A perfect accompaniment to time spent down by the sea…

For those of you who have purchased the pattern on Ravelry it has now been updated to include Week 4:

The free pattern with lots of step by step photos is below.

So let’s get started… enjoy!
