Welcome to Week 5 of my ‘Down by the Sea’ Blanket crochet-along (CAL) – the penultimate week! After this week we’ll only have the border left to do… It’s been an absolute joy to share this design with so many of you… 💙

I can’t quite believe that December has arrived. For those of us who celebrate Christmas, we can start to feel festive and this week I certainly did when I was invited to the preview event of the ‘Glow Wild’ lantern trail at Wakehurst which isn’t too far away from us. I share more in my chat with you here during a beautiful coastal sunset… enjoy!

Here are a few photos from what was a mesmerising and magical display of lights in such a beautiful setting…

Wakehurst has the tallest living Christmas tree in the UK decorated with 1,800 lights!

And a couple of photos from the gorgeous sunset…

The weekly round up of photos shared by so many of you either in the Facebook Group or over on Instagram is particularly wonderful this week with photos shared from a Swedish lake, the Australian outback, an Irish harbour, a carousel in Mexico and a photo by Bournemouth pier to name just a few!! Wow!! 😍😍😍

Moving onto this weeks crochet and we repeat the rows from last week on the opposite side of the blanket, but we also add to both sides with some parasol inspired stitches!

Gazing across the beach there are lots of groups of people all enjoying their time down by the sea. Parasols provide welcome shade on the beach but it’s also the café’s lining the promenade which have parasols up to help us keep cool and out of the blazing heat of the midday sun whilst we enjoy a beachside treat!

Here I enjoyed coffee by the beach in Brighton…😄

And here I enjoyed a coffee in the Lower Gardens in Bournemouth… 😄

The shell stitches we’ll be crocheting this week are crocheted in the traditional way but by changing colour at the end of each stitch, alternating between two colours, we’ll get a striped parasol effect!

For those of you who have purchased the pattern on Ravelry it has now been updated to include Week 5:

The free pattern with lots of step by step photos is below.

So let’s get crocheting!! 🙂
