This week is going to be hot, and I’m guessing this summer is going to be particularly steamy. Most French restaurants don’t have air conditioning inside and you need a break from the heat at lunch…so where to go? These are my top three. Great food, service, and cool air!

CRU – Go for the amazingly refreshing cuisine! First of all the food is raw. So nothing is cooked, no heat is being emitted from the kitchen, and the dining room is a stone ‘cave’ or cellar. It’s the best for dining well and staying cool. The menu has a great mix of seasonal vegetables, local fish and meats. Asparagus carpaccio, tuna tartare and duck tatami are just some of the delicious items that have been served up by talented Chef Elodie.

Her husband Jeremie choose some great local wines, don’t miss a chance to try a white from AOC Pessac Leognan / 33 Rue des Bahutiers, 33000 Bordeaux /

La Chapon Fin – go for the exclusive dining in the cool cave!

While it is the oldest restaurant in Bordeaux (at over two hundred years), this family run business has had some recent updates. Bring a small group and have a private dining experience in their wine cellar. Besides having one of the most impressive wine lists in town, the newly created space is perfect for getting away from the heat, and the crowds. Menus at lunch are just under 30€, service is exceptional / 5 Rue Montesquieu, 33000 Bordeaux / +33 (0)5 56 79 10 10 /

L’Estacade – Go for the view! Located on the water, on the Bastide side of Bordeaux, this riverside restaurant is on the touristy side (food wise). Get in early to enjoy dining on the Garonne, catching some cool water breeze while dining on regional oysters and drinking a nice, crisp AOC Entre-Deux-Mers. If you want a table outside on the terrace in the shade, be sure to request in advance / Quai des Queyries, 33100 Bordeaux / +33 (0)5 57 54 02 50 /
