How to make your home feel fresh

As much as we might not like to admit it, we don’t always have the time to give our homes a real deep clean. Sometimes, it’s just a case of running the vacuum cleaner around and dusting away the worst of the cobwebs – sometimes, it’s not even that.

Yet, no matter how much we may clean (or not), there are some useful tips to help your home feel fresh, even if it still needs some cleaning when you do have time. Read on to find out what you can do to ensure your home feels as fresh as possible.

Have live plants in your home

Putting a plant or a bouquet of fresh flowers in a room is a quick and easy way to make it feel a lot fresher and cleaner. That’s why it’s a common way for real estate agents to stage a house and a trick used by stylists to style magazine photo shoots. Also, some plants do more than just make a room look clean; some actually clean the air.

Fresh flowers are another way to make a room look more put together. The light floral scent will also make your home smell great.

Rearrange furniture

Just moving the furniture around can make a big difference. Try moving side tables or occasional chairs from one room to another or rearranging the furniture in the same room. At the very least, we recommend moving furniture away from walls to give an area room to breathe.

This will feel fresher, but because you’re making each room look different as well, it will look fresher. Everyone will be so interested in where things are and getting used to the new layout that a little dust here and there isn’t going to faze them.

Use essential oils

Smells are hard to describe because they are different for each person. Some people love the scent of vanilla or cinnamon, while others find them too strong. Because of this, essential oils are a great way to freshen your home because they only leave a light scent behind. They’re made to smell a certain way, and some of them have anti-inflammatory properties.

If you like the smell of these oils but don’t like candles, you could use them in a Glasshouse diffuser.

Edit your stuff

When a room looks a little worn out, you don’t always have to add something to make it better. In fact, you may just need to take away the parts that make it look tired. By getting rid of most of your excess décor, you can bring back your favourite items and only those items. The rest can be donated or put into storage, and you’ll be left with a clear, well-organised space that feels lovely and refreshed.

When you get back to the basics, you’ll be able to see which things you need and which ones are just taking up space or don’t go with the rest of your décor.

Make your bed every day

One of the easiest methods to give the impression that your home is clean without actually doing any cleaning, dusting or decluttering is to make your bed every day. Coming home to a properly made bed at the end of a long day can improve your mood about the entire home. And it only takes a few minutes out of your day first thing.

Some people even believe that making their bed before going to sleep helps them have a more restful night’s sleep. The National Sleep Foundation conducted a study showing that those who make their bed every morning are 19 percent more likely to wake up feeling rested than those who don’t.

If you’ve been having trouble sleeping, making your bed first thing in the morning may help you get into the routine of relaxing and drifting off to dreamland, which is essential for your physical and emotional well-being.

Introduce a new colour palette

Colour affects our emotions and moods, and adding a new colour palette to a room makes a big difference to how we feel in it, and you don’t have to go overboard.

You only need to use three to five pops of your colour palette to make a room look good. Choose two colours and one neutral. Use a ratio of 60:30:10, where 60 percent of the space is one colour, 30 percent is another colour, and ten percent is your accent hue. This is a simple and fool-proof way to introduce a range of colours that work well together.

When you choose the right colours, your home will look lovely and fresh. Although, do bear in mind that the work you’ll need to do to change the colour will be more than the effort you’d have to put in to clean the house!
