Earlier, India won the toss and chose to bat first and made a huge score of 349/8 in 50 overs due to great batting by Shubham Gill 208 (149), Rohit Sharma 34 (38), and Suryakumar Yadav 31 (26). Daryl Mitchell 2/30 (5), Henry Shipley 2/74 (9), Mitchell Santner 1/56 (10), Blair Tickner 1/69 (10), and Lockie Ferguson 1/77 (10) were wicket-taker bowlers from the New Zealand side. After this inning, India set a huge target of 350 runs in 50 overs for New Zealand to win the first one-day match.

During chasing, New Zealand was all out at only 337 runs in 49.2 overs and lost this match by only 12 runs with India due to great bowling by Mohammad Siraj 4/46 (10), Kuldeep Yadav 2/43 (8), Shardul Thakur 2/54 (7.2), Mohammad Shami 1/69 (10), and Hardik Pandya 1/70 (7). Michael Bracewell 140 (78), Mitchell Santner 57 (45), and Finn Alenn 40 (39) were good batting from the New Zealand side.

Shubham Gill (IND), 208 (149), was declared as the Player of the Match due to his great performance in batting.
