What’s the difference between a Scrum Master and a Project Manager? Let’s break it down. A Scrum Master helps to apply the Scrum Framework. His main responsibility is to facilitate the work of a small scrum team so it efficiently follows prescribed meetings and artifacts. Ideally, the Scrum Master should not interfere with teamwork or decisions. He should help them to self-organize. There are not that many responsibilities and activities during the day for a Scrum Master, so it common that one person leads several scrum teams. Also, most of the companies don’t follow Scrum or agile principles to the latter. That’s why the scrum master may perform other responsibilities as well. A project manager leads a project from initiation to closure using any available tools, processes, knowledge, and skills. She is not constrained by one framework. Rather a PM should use what is best for the given project. The Project Manager is responsible for all aspects of a project including budget, schedule, a methodology to use, hiring people, procurement, and so on. All in all, a PM has a broader range of responsibilities and capabilities. Quite often a project manager may act as a Scrum Master at certain periods of a project.
