Rain! We had a bit of rain during the week! Not a huge amount. A couple of hours of organised rain, enough to wet the surface of the soil. Really we need several days of that, but I’ll take it.
There will be no gardening this weekend, I shall be glamping in Devon with the current Mrs Jones. While we’re toasting marshmallows on an open fire and other such jolly japes, you can all do Six on Saturday. Six things, in the garden, on a Saturday. You know the drill.
Here are mine for this week…
1 – What’s the story, Morning Glory? I didn’t sow any of these this year, so this’ll be from a seed dropped last year, or even the year before. I always half expect to find a small light bulb down by the stamens, so stark is the contrast with the colouring of the outer petals.
2 – Teasel. My rogue teasel plants have finished flowering, and are now gearing up to spread zillions of seeds, ensuring a teasel forest next year. I plan to whip off their heads before they can do that.
3 – Canna. Despite the lack of rain over the summer (they are notoriously thirsty plants), my canna have returned once again, mainly untroubled by slugs. I just leave them in the ground, they seem to manage ok over winter. It’s a shame the leaves aren’t more interesting, they’re a rather plain green, but mustn’t grumble.
4 – Rose ‘Harlow Carr’. Or at least I think it is. Could possibly be ‘Gabriel Oak’, although I think that is a darker, deeper shade of pink. This is one of three shrub roses purchased in the spring that I’ve (eventually) planted in boxes on the patio, intending to train them like mini climbers up the short stretch of trellis behind them.
5 – Nadina domestica. Flowers now, berries later.
6 – Sedum not-Autumn-Joy. I expect if I look hard enough there’s a plant label nearby that would tell me exactly what this is. I am certain it’s not Autumn Joy.
