I was so excited when Caitlin reached out and asked if I wanted to read her debut book: a collection of short, creepy stories perfect for spooky season. I’ve known Caitlin since university and her penchant for storytelling has always been incredible, so I knew I was in for a treat.
This Not That Scary: A Little Collection of Creepy Short Stories is full of wholesome spooks and scares! Readers will come across witches, haunted books, vampires, ghosts, sinister time-travel, and strange, mysterious objects. The stories will make your spine tingle, but you (should) still be able to sleep just fine at night.
I loved how a lot of the stories were set in Canadian cities and towns; it made it so much easier to picture the cold, colourful Fall settings. And the descriptions were perfect for creating a lite macabre atmosphere. Reading this book after work as the sun started to set, wrapped up in a blanket with a hot mug of tea was just perfect.
Two stories in this collection really stood out to me.
“The Cobbler’s Cabinet” hit close to home because I used to work in a museum, and NOTHING is freakier than having to walk through a collection room at night in the dark when you’re pretty sure you’re the only one left in the building *shudders*.
And “Ghosts of Us” truly tugged at my heartstrings. People typically think ghost stories are scary, but this story perfectly illustrates how someone can be haunted by missed connections and emotional relationships that they’ve longed for but will never get to fully experience.
If you’re looking for a collection of short stories to get you in autumnal mood, or you want to dip your toes in some spooky season reading, then I highly recommend this book!
