It’s been almost a whole month since I kick-started my Meet the Debut Author 2023 series, and I have to admit, my new year TBR has grown a few titles. I only have myself (and the authors) to blame!
Today I am really excited to bring the very fabulous Georgina Moore to The Reading Closet’s sofa to chat about her upcoming debut novel release of The Garnett Girls, which is due to be published in the UK in February by HQ Stories, then in the USA by Avon Books in May 2023. Pre-order you copy here.

Hello Georgina! Thank you for joining me today and taking the time to answer some questions about your upcoming debut, The Garnett Girls. To kickstart this Q&A, could you please briefly introduce yourself and The Garnett Girls?
My name is Georgina Moore, I work at Midas, an arts PR company and I am a book publicist who worked in publishing for 20 years. My debut novel is called The Garnett Girls and it will be published on 16th February by HQ.
I remember very briefly meeting you at a Headline event and your knowledge and passion for publishing and PR really inspired me. I’m also, very much looking forward to reading The Garnett Girls. For those who aren’t aware of your debut, could you share with us a tagline?
The sweeping new debut novel and family drama of 2023 that everyone is falling in love with.
I am so ready to fall in love with your book! Why did you decide to write a novel in your chosen genre?
I didn’t really think about the genre, I just wrote the kind of story I like reading. A story that is character lead and about family and relationships and the complicated messiness of siblings and mothers and daughters.
I’ve started to understand that a book is written, an author is driven to write a novel but the novel itself is definitely the one in control. So, flash forward, The Garnett Girls has been picked up for the big screen and YOU get to pick the actors who will play your characters. Who would be in your cast list?
Minnie Driver, Julia Roberts or Emma Thompson would all make a good Margo. The sister could be played by Kirsten Stewart (Sasha), Emma Stone (Imogen), and Rachel McAdams (Rachel). DREAM.
That is such a dreamy cast of actors! Noone would have read your novel more than yourself. Is there a quote that stands out as your favourite quote from The Garnett Girls?
‘Love make you do things you never thought you were capable of.’
Love that quote so much! We take a lot away from reading. If there were anything, what would you like your readers to take away from The Garnett Girls?
I would like them to feel swept away and some sense of escapism, but also to feel the truth in the observations and to fall in love with the characters.
From what you’ve said about The Garnett Girls already, along with what I have read about it up until this point, I believe that readers will walk away from the final page with just that! As we know, you’re a debut author, and we would love to know what the highlight of being a debut author has been for you so far!
I am loving every minute of it, as it is a dream I have had since childhood. I am loving being the other side of things – poacher turned gamekeeper – but also trying hard not to be a nightmare for my publishing team!
It’s like when they say that doctors make the worst patients! I can imagine that your journey as a debut author has helped you see it from the other side. We’ve chatted your highlights, but what are you most looking forward to on your debut journey?
I cannot wait to talk to booksellers and readers and to get in to bookshops for events.
That would be so magical! What one piece of advice would you give writer you one year ago?
Have faith in your Garnett girls!
Yes, always have faith in yourself AND your words! We all have authors who inspire us, what authors, if any, inspire you?
Oh, so many. Meg Mason, Clare Lombardo, Anne Tyler, Elizabeth Strout, Patrick Gale, Maggie O’Farrell, Jojo Moyes, Rachel Joyce, Veronica Henry and authors sadly no longer with us like Penny Vincenzi, Maeve Binchy, Mary Wesley.

Tea or coffee?
Coffee, I drink a lot of black coffee in the mornings.
Sweet or savoury?
Savoury – my go to naughty food would always be cheese and crisps over chocolate!
Morning worm or night owl?
I used to be a night person, but now because of kids and trying to find timer to write I do love an early morning just to myself!
Standalone or book series?
Both!
Are you a plotter or a panster?
Bit of both – I have an idea where I am going but also happy to let the characters lead me sometimes.
