Rapid Growth of a Variegated Monstera
The Variegated Monstera is a rare variety of Monstera plant which has white patches of colour on the leaves. It is actually a rare mutation, and the amount of white colouring can vary from plant to plant, and even from leaf to leaf on the same plant. The white parts of the leaves don’t have chlorophyll, and so a plant with too much white may die because it is unable to photosynthesise enough to feed the plant.
This post follows a variegated monstera grown by @laplantsociety on instagram, showing growth from a small four leaf plant to a large and tall plant with countless leaves in around 18 months.
Variegated Monsteras are popular, and because they are also rare, they can be quite expensive. If you are interested in purchasing one, it might be most viable to buy a single leaf cutting and propagate from that. One trick that you can do with aerial roots is to train them down to the soil so that they have access to the water with the plants. It can be a bit hard to do when they are older and more rigid so it’s best to train the roots down when they are young and still malleable. When angled down to the soil, the aerial roots grow quite strong and can eventually self support the plant itself. For more information on a post where this was done, see this post.
