Welcome to Week 2 of my ‘Down by the Sea’ Blanket crochet-along! 😄
This week is all about those seaside stripes – deck chairs and beach huts down by the sea giving us a definite coastal feel! 💙
Before we get started here’s a little welcome chat from down by the sea which I recorded a couple of days ago… 🙂

Whilst a wild, untouched, natural beach is simply wonderful, those beaches in cities, towns and villages, where people have congregated and things have built up around them, are to be celebrated too.
Both Brighton Beach near to where I live and Bournemouth Beach can be oh so busy… beach bars, cafes and even museums line the promenade. Beach Huts and Deck Chairs add to that beachside vibe too…

I adored creating these vertical stripes this week! I recommend going up half a hook size to what you’ve been using so far for the vertical stipes. The crochet fabric is a little denser so using a hook just half a size bigger helps counteract that…

Week 2 – Seaside Stripes: Deckchairs and Beach Huts!

Stripes
Use the middle-sized hook for Rounds 13 – 23. This is because the technique we’re using to create the stripes produces a denser fabric. I used a 5mm.
In Rounds 13 – 23 do not cut the yarn. Bring the ball of yarn through the final loop of each round and leave attached. This avoids lots of ends because the yarn can be re-joined in subsequent rounds. These rounds are made with the RS facing at all times.
Round 13 (RS) Join Yarn D into any corner ch-sp, 5ch (counts as 1 tr and 2 ch), 1tr in same corner ch-sp, *(4ch, miss 3 sts, 1tr in each of next 3 sts) 7 times to end of side, 4ch, miss final 3 sts**, (1tr, 2ch, 1tr) in corner ch-sp, repeat from * three times ending final repeat at **, ss to 3rd ch of beginning 5 ch, fasten off but do not cut yarn. [7 groups of 3 sts and 8 x 4-ch-sps on each side plus 4 x corner 2-ch-sps]
In Rounds 14 – 24, crochet into the missed sts two rounds below – pay attention to leave the 4-ch strand loose at the back and do not crochet around it. This helps to keep the colours solid at the front.
Round 14 (RS) Join Yarn E into corner ch-sp diagonally opposite from where Yarn D was joined, 1ch (does not count as st), *(1dc, 2ch, 1dc) in corner ch-sp, 2ch, miss 1 st, (1tr in each of next 3 sts, 4ch, miss 3 sts) 7 times, 1tr in each of next 3 sts, 2ch, miss final st of side, repeat from * three times, ss to first dc, fasten off but do not cut yarn. [8 groups of 3 sts and 7 x 4-ch-sps on each side plus extra sts in each corner ch-sp and 4 x corner 2-ch-sps]
