What is a Quantitative HBV DNA Test by PCR Method?

HBV DNA Quantitative PCR Test is a simple blood test that is done to diagnose and confirm the presence of Hepatitis B Virus in the infected patients. HBV stands for Hepatitis B Virus, DNA stands for Deoxyribonucleic acid and Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) is the procedure that is used to derive the value of the amount of present infecting virus in the blood.

This test is intended to use as an aid in the management of HBV infected patients and is not intended for use in the initial diagnosis or confirmation of HBV infection. It also aids in assessing viral response to antiviral treatment.

It can also be known as HBV DNA Quantitative, HBV DNA Quantitation, and HBV PCR Test.

Why is an HBV DNA Quantitative PCR Test done?

Your physician may suggest the test:

• To monitor the response of the therapy given to the patient.
• To predict the favorable treatment for the management of infection.
• To confirm the stage of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection.
• To quantify the amount of HBV DNA in patient’s blood with chronic HBV infection.
• To monitor disease progression in chronic HBV infection.
• To diagnose some cases of early acute HBV infection.
• To distinguish active HBV infection from inactive infection.

What is the procedure for an HBV DNA Quantitative PCR Test?

The procedure for an HBV DNA Quantitative PCR is quite simple, painless and non-invasive. Typically the test is performed at the patient’s residence. You will have to contact us to fix an appointment with the phlebotomist. The phlebotomist (expert technician) will arrive at your place with a pack of sterilized equipment.

To draw a blood sample from your vein in the hand, they will have to tie a rubber band on your arm above the elbow. A sterilized needle with an attached tube will be inserted in the vein and the sample will be collected. As soon as the collection of blood is done, the rubber band will be removed and a medical sticker will be applied at the puncture site to avoid infection.

The procedure takes 5-10 minutes as soon as the technician identifies the suitable vein to draw the blood. The collected sample will be labeled and send to a trusted lab to analyze it.

What is the normal reference range for an HBV DNA Quantitative PCR Test?

The quantification range of this assay is 20 to 170,000,000 IU/mL (1.30-8.23 log IU/mL). A quantitative result expressed in IU/mL (International Units Per Millilitre) indicates the degree of active HBV viral in the patient. Monitoring HBV DNA levels over time are important for assessing disease progression and monitoring a patient’s response to anti- HBV therapy.

A result with the statement “Detected” shows the level as <20 IU/mL (<1.30 log IU/mL). This assay cannot accurately quantify HBV DNA below this level indicates that the HBV DNA level is below the lower limit of quantification for this assay. When clinically indicated, follow-up testing with this assay is recommended in 1 to 2 months. An “Undetected” result indicates that hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA was not detected in the specimen.

What are the possible interpretations of an HBV DNA Quantitative PCR Test?

The test results are generally available within 2 – 4 working days after the test is performed.

The presence of HBV DNA in blood is a sign of active HBV replication. HBV DNA levels are detectable by 30 days following infection. It can turn into acute hepatitis if not detected at the right time. It can also decrease and disappear if the infection is resolved spontaneously. In cases of an acute viral hepatitis HBV DNA blood test is more useful than HBsAg test results.

Patients with chronic active HBV are at greater risk for more serious liver disease and are more infectious than patients with inactive HBV infection. This test is intended for use as an aid in the management of patients with chronic HBV infection undergoing antiviral therapy. The test can be used to measure HBV DNA levels at baseline and during treatment to aid in assessing response to treatment. The results from this test must be interpreted within the context of all relevant clinical and laboratory finding.

The limit of quantification of this DNA assay is 20 IU/mL. If the assay DID NOT FIND the virus, the test result will be reported as <20 IU/mL.” If the assay FIND the presence of the virus but was not able to accurately quantify the number of copies, the test result will be reported as “Not Quantified.”
