Many technologies have promised to revolutionize education, but so far none has. With that in mind, what could revolutionize education? These ideas have been percolating since I wrote my PhD in physics education: https://ve42.co/phd I have also discussed this topic with CGP Grey, whose view of the future of education differs significantly from mine: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7vsCAM17O-M I think it is instructive that each new technology has appeared to be so transformative. You can imagine, for example, that motion pictures must have seemed like a revolutionary learning technology. After all they did revolutionize entertainment, yet failed to make significant inroads into the classroom. TV and video seem like a cheaper, scaled back film, but they too failed to live up to expectations. Now there is a glut of information and video on the internet so should we expect it to revolutionize education? My view is that it won’t, for two reasons: 1. Technology is not inherently superior, animations over static graphics, videoed presentations over live lectures etc. and 2. Learning is inherently a social activity, motivated and encouraged by interactions with others. Filmed and edited by Pierce Cook Supported by Screen Australia’s Skip Ahead program. 1. Humans are social creatures (in consensus, not on each individual level). It would probably be a good idea to keep learning social.

  2. Yes youtube contains tons of educational material, but it also contains tons of Tiktok videos and other BS content. So obviously one cannot merely put a kid in front of a computer and consider education solved. The teacher’s job is to steer the student toward the helpful content, and away from the BS.

  3. So in a way Edison was right, the motion picture (YouTube) did revolutionize education. I’ve learned most of what I know through YouTube and applications. Hour-long lectures can be summed up in 5 minute videos that get straight to the point and that can allow the absorption of more information in a shorter span of time. And the essence of a “forum” is not lost as we can discuss it right here in the comments.

  4. Much like some of the teachers below. Elon Musk has a school His method in part is combination of all these things. I.E. he puts some screws and nuts on a metel and wood piece then another piece needs to be attached. The kids are shown once how the wrench and screw drivers work. Then the group of kids finish the job. In thier minds oh Now I see how the tools work and how things are made. I never got that in public school. But i see some teachers comments they did simalar methods . I did learn fractions and how to calculate them via old black and white film plus 3/4 inch (82.55 mm)(1,97cm) yet stll called 3.4 inch video tape. It worked ok. But teachers just have to be part of things.

  5. In my (& many others) opinion, most of the countries school education system’s main purpose was to produce clerks. Can he/she write an essay? Yes! ; Can he/she read and understand!? Yes! ; etc.
