CNBC Marathon explores if why the education system in the U.S. is struggling by taking a hard look at the Common Core, teacher’s salaries and sex education. First implemented in 2009, Common Core was an ambitious initiative to revolutionize the American education system. National leaders from Bill Gates to President Obama supported the idea and it cost an estimated $15.8 billion to implement. Years later, research showed the new curriculum had minimal impact on student performance. So why did Common Core fail? Can a common curriculum be successful for all students? At the same time, teachers earn nearly 20% less than other professionals with similar education and experience, according to the Economic Policy Institute. In many states, their wages are below the living wage, forcing teachers to seek secondary jobs to supplement their income or leave the profession all together. So why are teachers paid so little and how can the U.S. fix that? And the majority of U.S. students report they’ve had sex before graduation, which means the type of sex education they receive can be a big deal, for themselves personally and for the economy. The federal government doesn’t have any official regulations for what schools must include in sex education curriculum, which has lead to inconsistent lessons across the country. Watch the video above to learn why sex education is so crucial for the economy and what happens when some students are left behind. 1. Having been a teacher in a low income school district has great challenges. However not being aloud to disciple unruly and disrespectful students became a lost cause.

  2. Because we keep importing illegals. Its unsustainable. We might as well give up on public education. You can’t teach a dynamic set of students.

  3. not make me register erase transcript csu no money refund beginning fall teacher fail ff yesterday advisor don’t need your ssi then some money I’m thinking miss some money from account he will pay money back try lock school card check hold meal but building up money standard not enrich shell who

  4. I think a big reason why teachers (as well as social workers, home health aides, CNAs, etc) are paid so low is because they have been dominated by women and the societal assumption until rather recently historically has been their income only supplements a husband /primary earner. I was told in social work school that I should never expect to make a lot of money. I don’t need a lot. I just need to live. All I have now is thanks to help from my spouse. Teachers are so necessary and valuable as are all the jobs above. Pay us like it.

Nurses are paid slightly better thanks to unionization and effective strikes in the past but even then they are far underpaid for the labor they do.

  5. I wish that United States of America offer Adult High School diploma to those never able to it due any circumstances of life. I wish all high school teach Programming, Robotic, and have Arguments Realoty use for all. And making new laws that let kid have the right have some part time job.

  6. I did common core in elementary school, I don’t know wether the stuff I did in middle school is common core or not. All I know is it makes me slower at math which is a big problem in AP Calc. I don’t know the traditional way to divide and multiply multiple digit numbers which sounds insane. For multiplication I do the boxes and feel like an idiot.

  7. Just keep it simple. Reading, writing , arithmetic, geography and make it fun. Later add some basic science and some history. Other things can be learned in college or trade school if a person decides to go. And parents need to teach there children to respect the teacher and not be disruptive. For the little ones, don’t give them home work, let them play. We all forgot how to play. Even the older ones might be overburdened with homework, they need to spend more time with mom and dad. It is important to play and enjoy our beautiful planet, that is what makes us human. There is a time for and a time for play.
