Yes you heard right! For my birthday I asked for a second Tower Garden and ta-da! It’s here and already growing seedlings!

Why a second one? Well, the first one is doing awesome. I’ve successfully been growing tomatoes, peppers, and fresh herbs for the entire year that I’ve had it. We’ve made our own pesto on a regular basis, we’ve started incorporating fresh herbs into all our dinners, we’ve made our own cayenne pepper seasoning, and we enjoy fresh tomatoes all year long. In short it’s been a fantastic addition for a completely indoor gardener. I never realized how much better fresh grown herbs were compared to the dried stuff we always bought in jars.

But with everything I’ve been growing in the TG, there’s been one thing I frankly just haven’t had room for. Salad mixes! I eat a salad every day for lunch and I’m tired of paying $4 per bag, which lasts two days for the greens. I’m tired of having to worry if the salad I’m eating will give me listeria or E. coli, both of which are becoming way to frequent in the large, agro-businesses. I’m also rather tired of the bagged stuff tasting blah when the few different varieties I have grown in the TG have tasted amazing. And then there’s my favorite part where you open a new bag only to find it’s gone sour. Ick.

So with that in mind I spent a bit of time really debating whether or not it was worth getting a second tower. Finally I talked with my S.O. about it and he not only agreed, he already had a place in mind that he wanted to put it! It seems he’s wanted more fresh herbs and pesto!

With all this in mind, TG #2 will be dedicated to growing enough salad greens that will allow me to have a fresh salad each day. I’m not exactly sure how much I will need or the timing on seedlings but we will find out! I’m also currently planning on augmenting the salad mix with some micro-greens that I plan to start growing soon. I’ll let you know how that goes!

This time we did a short time-lapse of us putting it together, you can check that out at the bottom of this post. The TG is pretty easy to assemble; it took us 30 minutes with the extra additions.

Hopefully between two TG’s and some micro-greens I can keep myself going in daily salads all year long. We’ll see! I’m interested to find out how many plants it takes for daily salads and the timing between plantings. I’ll keep you posted!
