When Nessa Wold met Madison Boss through a mutual connection at a Lake Okoboji birthday party in 2019, little did they know they’d become best friends and ultimately business partners.

That’s how their story began.

The two women, both licensed cosmetic tattoo artists, each had spent several years working in the industry and had aspirations to pursue their own business.

They spent time working together in another studio when they started putting their own plans into action.

“We said, ‘Hey, this is our dream to own our own business, we’re young, now is the time to do it’,” Wold said.

Wold and Boss put their middle names together to create their business, Jane Lee Studio.

Jane Lee opened in September 2022 and provides services temporarily inside Rouge Salon Suites near 41st Street and Louise Avenue while their new space is under construction at Lake Lorraine.

The studio offers brow microblading, permanent eyeliner, lip blushing and a unique procedure called scalp micropigmentation for men and women, which mimics the hair follicle on the scalp to make the hair look more full. It’s a newer service to Sioux Falls and South Dakota.

Wold is a certified scalp micropigmentation artist.

“We love what we do,” Wold said. “Helping people through this industry and making people feel more confident is a passion of ours. It’s amazing how something so little can mean so much to someone.”

The client journeys at Jane Lee Studio sometimes can be as emotional as they are rewarding when the women work with clients who have been impacted by diagnoses such as alopecia or cancer.

In fact, the business offers free services for cancer survivors.

“They’ve gone through so much already, and it’s such a good feeling to have them come in and see brows on their face again or whatever it may be,” Boss said. “It’s the best feeling in the world.”

Their latest trending service is permanent jewelry, which can last up to five years if properly cared for.

“The jewelry is custom fit, welded together to get rid of the excess chain or clasp,” Boss explained. “Typically, it’s 14 karat gold, so you don’t have to worry about tarnishing.”

The two said they’re proud of the business so far and take pride in their continuing education as they go.

“This industry is new and evolving so quickly,” Boss said. “The tools and techniques are always changing, and we want to learn from the best so we can bring that to our clients here at home.”

Their new location is expected to open in March in the west-side Lake Lorraine development. It will be near Moe’s Home Collection in the retail center between Hobby Lobby and Dave & Buster’s.
