Here we are – Week 6 and the final instalment of my ‘Down by the Sea’ Blanket! 😄 We only have the border left to do…
It’s been such a wonderful crochet-along! Thank you so much to everyone who crocheted along with hooks in hand or simply watched from the sidelines. I truly appreciate you all. Here’s a little chat at sunrise where I share some more thoughts…
It really was a beautiful sunrise…
This weeks round-up of photos shared in either the Facebook Group or over on Instagram was, as always, a joy to put together… I’m in awe of all the beautiful blankets being made!
With only the border left to do, and as we come to end of our blanket, for me the perfect finish for this blanket was rounds of granny stitches. To remind us of the traditional crocheted blankets that maybe the Drifter’s sang about in their song!
🎵 ‘Under the boardwalk, down by the sea, yeah, on a blanket with my baby is where I’ll be” 🎶
It was this song that initially inspired this blanket and when I picture the scene they are singing about down by the sea, I imagine they are cosy on a granny square blanket! So simple granny stitches seems perfect…
As another crochet-along comes to an end, it got be reflecting on all the crochet-alongs I’ve designed and hosted over the last few years. There have actually been 10 which really surprised me!!
Down by the Sea has been my 10th crochet-along design… 😄
In 2018 there was the Seaside Stash Busting Blanket

Wow! It’s good to look back sometimes and all these designs are very special to me. All the patterns remain available so you can always go back and make any of these at anytime.
In other exciting news, I’ve been invited to open the 10th Waltham Abbey Wool Show on Sunday 15th January! It’s in Essex just north of London.
This is such an honour and it would be amazing to see some of you there if you’re in the area. I’ll be bringing all my blankets with me… 😁
There’s also a competition which I’ll be judging at the show so do have a look here if you want to take part…
So there you go… there’s plenty to keep us busy! 😁

Week 6 – On a Blanket with my Baby!
Here’s a YouTube tutorial for the first part of the border:
With RS of blanket facing, join Yarn D into second st in from the right in final row worked (Row 18).
Round 1 (RS) 3ch (counts as first tr), 2tr in same st, *(miss 2 sts, 3tr in next st) until final st at end of side, miss final st, 2ch (first corner), 3tr in side of Row 18, continue down long side of blanket with 7 x groups of 3tr evenly spaced across the row edges until central square is reached, miss first st on central square, 3tr in next st, (miss 2 sts, 3tr in next st) to end of square, miss final st, work 8 groups of 3tr evenly along row edges to end of side**, 2ch (second corner), miss first st of next side, 3tr in next st, repeat from * across next side and second long side ending at **, 2ch, ss to top of first 3 ch, fasten off, turn. [43 x groups of 3-tr along top and bottom and 59 x groups of 3-tr along the side edges with 4 x corner 2-ch-sps]
Round 2 (WS) Join Yarn E into any corner ch-sp, 3ch (counts as first tr), (2tr, 2ch, 3tr) into same corner ch-sp, *(miss 3 sts, 3tr into space before next group of 3-tr) to final 3-tr group, miss 3 sts, (3tr, 2ch, 3tr) in next corner ch-sp, repeat from * twice more, (miss 3 sts, 3tr into sp before next group of 3-tr) to end of side, miss 3 sts, ss to top of first 3 ch, fasten off, turn.
Round 3 (RS) Make sure RS is facing and repeat Round 2 using Yarn F.

Round 4 (RS) Join Yarn G to any st, 1ch (counts as first dc), complete 1 reverse double crochet stitch (also known as Crab Stitch) in each st around working 2 reverse dc into the corner ch-sps, fasten off and weave in all ends.
