We first tried Hey Clay at BlogOn 2022, and knew instantly it would be a hit with Lily, so when we had the opportunity to give it a try, Lily was super excited to find it in the box of goodies from the Good Play Guide.

Here’s how we got on…

What is Hey Clay?

Hey Clay is a combination of non-sticky, air-dry clay as well as an app. Children (or adults) can follow the app to simply build a whole number of different characters.

Each set is different, with the choice of bugs, farm animals, dinosaurs, beasts, aliens, ocean animals and more to sculpt, using a whole range of different colours (included in the set), making it a great choice for a unisex gift for kids who love to be creative.

Our review

Lily loves to use her imagination when it comes to building or creating things, rather than following a set plan, so the first thing she did was remove the clay pots and start creating her own ideas.

I made sure she didn’t use all the colours, so she could still try the app, but she instantly loved the feel of the clay – it is so soft, mouldable and not sticky, so it is really easy to use.

We had the Birds pack, so I suggested we download the Hey Clay app and try to make one of the birds together by following the instructions.

The App was really easy to download, and we had a code inside the box to be able to access all the Birds instructions – you also have the choice of paying for any extra designs on there too that aren’t included in your pack.

Lily chose the penguin to start with, and she instantly loved the whole experience – the instructions were clear, with visual and audio instructions, to simply build the design in very easy, child-friendly steps.

Through animations, your penguin was brought to life as you built it, and she was so excited by it that she immediately asked to build another one as soon as she’d finished the penguin.

In fact, she enjoyed it so much and was so engaged, that she sat and built all the different birds in the pack, without wanting to take a break – which was also a win-win as I could get some housework done around her and cook dinner, knowing she was happily occupied by building her birds!

Conclusion

Lily loves getting involved in these reviews, so she said herself that she gives Hey Clay a “DEFINITE 5 STARS”!

The animations were great, the instructions were clear, and the clay was so easy to use. In fact, she still had loads of clay left at the end to still be able to create her own birds and creations using her imagination – she made some nests for the birds, some eggs for the nest, food and more!

I loved watching her complete the birds too – at first she was following them strictly and asking me to check she was doing it right, but by the end she was independently using her imagination to create her own versions of the birds, such as by giving them big eyes or spiky hair, and she was laughing away while she was doing it.

We’d definitely do more Hey Clay packs again and would very much recommend it as a birthday or Christmas gift for any creative kid. It’s aimed at children over 5 years old – Lily is age 7 and I know there will be many more years that she will enjoy these for.
