The US House Foreign Affairs Committee is set to vote in February on a possible nationwide TikTok ban that, if approved, will be submitted to the House of Representatives for consideration. The plan was proposed by the Committee’s chair Representative Michael McCaul, who said he considered the Chinese-owned short video platform a threat to American national security. A TikTok spokesperson told Bloomberg a total ban would be a “piecemeal approach to national security and a piecemeal approach to broad industry issues like data security, privacy, and online harms.” A total of 25 US states have already banned TikTok on government-owned devices.
