Are superfoods all that they’re cracked up to be? There’s plenty of worldwide hype about eating chia seeds, goji berries and quinoa – but what benefits do they really bring? This documentary looks at what superfoods do for people and more. How is the healthy eating boom influencing agriculture and business? There are more and more restaurants serving superfoods in Germany. Florian Klar of Bochum opened the first superfood bistro in the Ruhr region about a year ago. He buys in all types of food, using local suppliers when he can, but he also uses exotic superfoods in his meals. Quinoa, goji berries and chia seeds can now all be found in supermarkets as well. The food industry has discovered selling these products is lucrative and changed its product selection accordingly. Superfoods are simply that a foodstuff contains a high amount of nutrients. “Every country has its own superfood,” says nutritionist Matthias Riedl. Blueberries, flax seed, blackcurrants, and kale are all superfoods native to Germany. The film also takes viewers to Bolivia, a key quinoa exporter, to see how the hype has influenced farming there. Exports of the so-called “Inca corn” quadrupled between 2007 and 2013. The rising price of quinoa on global markets has led Andean farmers to increase the size of their fields. Yet after just two straight years of quinoa harvests, the soil is already exhausted and barren. ——————————————————————- DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines. 1. There is no miracle superfood but a good natural food diet is better than the junk food that is the normally served incorporate chain restaurants or on the shelves of supermarkets which — for people who don’t read labels — is a place of danger. My parents who owned a dairy and super marketed in California said that same thing when I was a kid in the 1950s. They were right.

I live in France where the normal food is much more NORMAL, but in the supermarkets, which look more & more like regular US Supermarkets rather even than US Whole Foods Markets are shelved with corporate junk alongside a higher percentage of real food. It’s sad to watch the corporate junk food fill people’s carts. There is no substitute for knowledge. If you are confused about what to buy, buy some books on nutrition (skip any with “Miracle” of “Magic” in the title). Science on many things is unsettled but science offers our best guide on the big things.

Good job… I learned a lot from this… especially about sustainability. Thank you…jt

P.S. Me gusta el chiste sobre la quinua de clase tres…jt

  2. Environmental and economic risks, health concerns, etc… This happens to just about every food or commodity.

What is DW talking about ?!

Milk, meat, cheeses, wheat, sugar, coffee, eggs, fish, chocolate, etc… One can discern toxic and other problematic fingerprint for the production, transport and consumption of each of these “tried and true” “non-hype” “non-exotic” foods.

Sponsored opinion disguised as diligent information, pretension to be adopted as responsible, cautious, well-informed analysis and subtle advice ?

  3. This documentary shows that veganism doesn’t make sense if vegans give their money to super rich companies, because they are not interested on veganism, but on profit.

  4. Really wonderful documentary discussing many things around mono crop dangers. Diversity in farming and living is very important for the globe. Thank you very much for a good enlightening video.

  5. masterpiece documentary i think the problems with super food healthy food is expensive and out of reach for most people as I experience my self it might appeal to more affluent middle class people

  6. Eat Seasonal Orignal fruits & veggies which you can buy easily from your local stores. Don’t eat out of seasonal fruits, Veggies, or which doesn’t grow in your Country. And also try to avoid packaged or processed food.

  7. Oh my horrible god. We contemplate a decadent diversity to to present healthy at best presented. I see nothing but trash in this field

  9. Almost everyone I know and have ever met who’s overweight has always had poor impulse control and/or ate an unhealthy diet. There are a few exceptions to this but not really… eating healthy is NOT hype!!!
It’s not like you become Superman because you ate a balanced diet over the course of a day… But over the course of weeks, months, years, it all adds up! And the risk of developing debilitating diseases goes drastically down by cutting out as much processed shit as you can. It’s worth your time to learn how to properly read labels and ingredient lists. Make yourself aware of what some of these harmful chemicals can potentially do to your body and try to focus on eating single ingredient foods. You can still eat delicious, unhealthy foods from time to time but just be aware of when you’re overdoing it and learn how to properly balance it in moderation.
Eating healthy nutritious food is just as vital as Exercise & Sleep. Your overall quality of life will always be impacted by how well you can take care of yourself. Developing good Discipline in this regard is everything.
