Coffee’s earliest consumption dates back millennia when the tribesmen of Ethiopia used its ground-up berries to help aid concentration during prayer. Arriving in Europe in the 17th century, Coffee quickly began to replace beer and wine as a favourite breakfast drink. In the 20th century, coffee was blamed for high blood pressure and heart attacks, and more recently linked to a rising epidemic of poor sleep. None of this has prevented coffee’s relentless rise. Over 2 billion cups of the stuff are drunk each day. So, is coffee a guilty treat as many of us suspect? Or is it a health drink feeding your good gut bacteria? In this episode, Jonathan speaks with James Hoffmann and Tim Spector to find out. They discuss how coffee affects your gut bacteria, your hormones and your heart, whether decaffeinated coffee is healthy, and discover some of coffee’s most surprising side effects – which could come in handy if you find yourself in the jungle. James Hoffmann is a leading coffee expert and author of the World Atlas of Coffee and co-founder & chairman of the Square Mile Coffee Roasters. Tim Spector is a co-founder at ZOE and one of the top 100 most cited scientists in the world. 1. Drinking coffee can be deadly. A guy I know became blind while drinking it. He had not taken the teaspoon out of the mug and poked his eye with it.

  2. In Finland we got law that every worker that have 8 hours of work, should have two 12,5 minute ‘kahvitauko’ wich means literally coffee break. Of course we got morning coffee and coffee after each main food so it is common to drink coffee 5 times a day and typical coffee cup is 1-2 dl. Casual coffees like after sauna coffee or going to city is add to that. Commonly we first make one pan of coffee for quests and visitors so they can take few cups if they will and only after that we ask “do you wan’t more?”. I got expresso cups but they are for little kids.
I think Finland must be good place to research issue of “coffee/caffine and health”. Finnish coffee culture is also worth looking – it goes trough society. After a giving birth you got coffee and it is important part of funerals also.

  3. You didn’t talk about the acidity of coffee 10% people can’t drink it due to high acidity, and what is low acidity coffee , thanks for good info

  4. depends on how much you drink after getting up 4 and your butt/colon works fine 5 and your gag reflex works better .

  5. Wait…beer and wine was the morning drink of choice?! I’m drinking a decaf brew now and feeling particularly sanctimonious now as not working my way through an ale or Rioja! 🙂

  6. As a ex coffee drinker… due to lack of knowledge and seeing my parents drink coffee… After gaining knowledge due to podcasts like this. One can learn from the insects. The insects are truly more knowledgeable than humans. They know this as a poison and to stay clear of it. After listening to this podcast I wonder how much they were paid off by the coffee industry to say that coffee is okay for humans directly, and not okay for insects.

  7. Yes, Coffee is additive for many people. A person that drinks coffee every day when you are without it, you can get really bad headaches from caffeine loss, also you have issues with restless legs and anxiety until you consume your regular amount. It is not the same as drug addiction; but does affect you addictively

  8. Super conversation men! Given that a broken clock can tell the correct time twice a day- I’m not going to say my unwillingness to assimilate the ” coffee is bad for you ” message over the years was brilliant insight on my part – I just never got an answer to “Why?” that made any sense whatsoever! Yup we all ran the risk of not knowing the risks of too much, but I listened to what my body told me (and work colleagues mostly!), for that barometer!
@Tim Spectre – early in this talk you said you thought it was addictive? Could you quantify that? My thoughts are, for me, more habit forming than addictive?

  9. Great doctor like you are rare to found I really appreciate your kind gesture towards my ailment called Herpes Virus.
