Scrolling through our social media feeds feels like a harmless part of our daily lives. But is it actually as harmless at seems? According to social media expert Bailey Parnell, our growing and unchecked obsession with social media has unintended long term consequences on our mental health. As social media continues to become part of the fabric of modern life – the “digital layer” – abstinence is becoming less of an option. Bailey think it’s high time we learned to practice safe social before it’s too late. What are the common triggers? How are they affecting you over time? How can you create a more positive experience online? Bailey covers this and more in “Is Social Media Hurting Your Mental Health?” Bailey Parnell was recently named one of Canada’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women. She is an award-winning digital marketer, public speaker and businesswoman with a talent for helping people tell better stories. Her work and expertise have been featured on CBC, CTV & in other local Toronto media. Bailey recently founded SkillsCamp, a soft skills training company where they help people develop the essential skills needed for professional success. She also currently works in digital marketing at Ryerson University. Bailey is a frequent public speaker having spoken to more than 10 thousand people. She primarily speaks about social media, personal branding, and media and mental health. She guest lectured her first MBA class at 21-years-old and has been the youngest speaker as multiple academic conferences. She is currently pursuing her Masters in Communication and Culture with a research focus on social media and mental health, and holds an honours BA from the RTA School of Media at Ryerson. 1. how we use the social spells out the difference. Perhaps we just need to be smarter and more responsible in the use of socials…

    1. definitely, i have an account where i follow all the celebrities and topics i love, it doesnt affect me because i am not operating from a place of comparison. i also dont accept any friend requests, i follow the people i look up to and thats it. im happy there but on my other account with normal individuals like me the misery is insufferable. so you do have a point its all about what you are consuming, on my other account i follow people i do not care for because thats how instagram worked for when i was posting bookstagram content, i had to follow to be followed. im the happiest when im off that account with ‘online friends’ who are often not really friends, its all an illusion

    1. @Auberninja its not hard.
      2 clicks on the phone.
Hold it a bit, say “delete app” – “yes”

      done.
Put on screen time option for your phone. Place urself in a busy schedule. go to gym, cook by urself an clean by urself. trust me by then half ur day is gone anyway without looking at the phone once.
once u live alone and u start to get addicted you will have a miserable life.

    2. @Viet Hai Vu I don’t use YT on my phone, I use it on my laptop. And the things I like to do the most on YT with my laptop is making comments on videos, replying to comments, and reading other peoples coments

  2. Not sure if I am supposed to “Like” this video in the event Bailey is tempted to check. But her speech is spot on.

  3. I want deprived myself from social media and focus on my self-improvement. But im afraid that i might be left-out

  4. I can quit social media but I can`t quit the internet itself, the internet is the only entertainment I had, I watch series and movies through streaming platforms, I got sick of social media because people out there only post or tweet and spread negative posts and being drama quine over trivial stuff.

  5. It’s difficult to let go of social media as a business owner. There’s another great TED talk on why you don’t need social media to have a successful business and it is so relieving to watch.

  6. Social media is being used for so many toxic purposes and agendas…it’s hard to find what’s good on there! The toxicity definitely effects your mental health.

  7. Cellular Girl
Some boys tweet and some boys post
    But I subscribe the most
Since I don’t tell them face to face
    I cannot find solace

They may selfie. They may fake it
    I can’t seem to quit
When I compare, and I’m impressed
    I simply get depressed

    Refrain
‘Cause we are living in a cellular world
And I am a cellular girl
You know that we are living in a cellular world
And I am just a cellular girl

    Some boys follow. Some unfriend
    I’m texting till the end
Since I’m addicted to my phone
    I’m left here all alone

Some boys crash and some boys fall
‘Cause they can’t see the wall
    Social media is my bliss
    But real life I miss

    Repeat refrain

  8. So addictions can be managed? Hmmm. Do we tell the same to drug, alcohol and tobacco addicts? If it works for one addiction, should it not work for all? Does one size really fit all?
